Your privacy in Scatter
Version 1.2. Published 11 October 2026. Checked again by 6 October 2027, or sooner if anything changes.
The short version
- Scatter never knows your real name. You are a codename, an avatar and a PIN. Only your teacher knows which codename is you, on paper, outside Scatter.
- It keeps very little: the days you signed in, which steps you finished in your apps, and, only while your hand is up, the one answer you chose for your teacher.
- Only you and your teachers see it. Never other students, never advertisers. It is never sold, and never used to train AI.
- It stays in Australia, in Sydney.
- You can see all of it on See my data, and ask for it to be fixed or deleted.
Who runs Scatter
Scatter is run by [name of the school] for its classes. A teacher at the school built it and looks after it. It is one sign-in for the school's class apps: Home Ground, Field HQ, Camp Green Lake, Great Hall Ledger, Adelaide 2050 and Medieval Town.
What Scatter keeps about you, and why
| What | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Your codename and avatar (picked from fixed lists) | So you can sign in and your teacher knows it is you | Until you leave your last class |
| Your PIN, scrambled so nobody can read it back | So only you can sign in as you | Until you leave your last class |
| Your classes | To show the apps for your year | Until you leave your last class |
| The days you signed in, and which apps you opened and for roughly how many minutes (dates, never times) | To grow your field and show your teacher who has been working | Ten weeks |
| Which steps you finished in each app | To show your progress | One term |
| Your answer letters on quick check-in questions, and whether a step felt easy, OK or hard (only if you said) | So your teacher knows what to teach again | One term |
| One answer from a fixed list, when you tap "Talk to my teacher" (no typing, no date or time) | So your teacher knows what you need | Gone when your teacher has been to you, or when your sign-in ends at the bell |
| Your two taps on "How was today's work?" (clear? interesting?), counted for the whole class. Nothing records which you chose | So your teacher can see how a lesson went for the class | Ten weeks |
| "I'm stuck": that your hand is up | So your teacher can come and help | Until the end of the lesson |
| Your collection of cards | So you can collect them | Until you leave your last class |
Never kept: your real name, email, birthday, address, photo, voice, where you are, or anything about your health or how you learn. Reading supports (like bigger text) stay on your own device and are never sent anywhere.
How it is collected: you type or choose it in Scatter, and each app tells Scatter which steps you finished. Your apps keep your actual work themselves (see below). Scatter never reads it.
If you do not give it: you need a codename, avatar and PIN to use Scatter. Everything else is optional, or comes from using your apps.
Your work in each app
Each app keeps your work (your answers, writing and progress) in its own database in Sydney, linked to your codename, not your name. Medieval Town keeps your journal only on the laptop you used, until you save it to hand in. Your teacher can tell you exactly what each app keeps.
Who can see it
- You.
- Your teachers, for their own classes, to help you learn.
- The teacher who looks after Scatter, to keep it working and safe.
It is never shared with anyone else, unless the law requires it. It is never used for advertising, never sold, and never used to train artificial intelligence. There are no ads in Scatter.
Where it is kept, and the companies that help
Scatter uses two companies. Your information is stored in Australia.
| Company | What it does | What it handles | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neon (neon.tech) | Stores Scatter's database, and each app's | Everything in the table above | Sydney, Australia (on Amazon Web Services) |
| Netlify (netlify.com) | Sends the pages of Scatter and the apps to your browser | None of your information. Like every website host, it sees the internet address and browser of whoever opens a page. | Servers in many countries. The company is in the United States. |
Both companies have staff in other countries who could, in rare cases, see the systems while fixing a fault. Your information is not sent overseas. If it ever had to move out of Australia, the school would be told well before it happened.
Seeing, fixing and deleting your information
- See it: See my data shows everything Scatter keeps about you, and lets you save a copy. It is free.
- Fix it: you can change your avatar yourself. For anything else, ask your teacher.
- Delete it: ask your teacher. Removing you from your last class deletes everything Scatter keeps about you.
Families can ask too, through the school. Requests are free and dealt with as soon as possible, within 30 days.
Raising a concern
If something in Scatter is not working, feels unsafe, or you are worried about your privacy:
- Tell your teacher in person, or tap "Talk to my teacher" and choose an answer.
- Or contact the school's privacy contact: [name, role and email of the school's privacy contact].
- If you are not happy with the answer, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner: oaic.gov.au, 1300 363 992.
Worried about your safety or someone else's? Talk to a trusted adult at school, or call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, any time.
If something goes wrong
If information in Scatter is ever lost or seen by someone who should not see it, the school will be told straight away. Students and families affected will be told as soon as possible, with what happened and what was involved, and the Australian Information Commissioner will be told when the law requires it.
When this policy changes
It gets a new version number and date. The next time you sign in, Scatter shows you what changed, and you press "I understand" before you carry on.
